Riding Lawn Mower Guide

No two lawns are the same, and that's why before making any purchasing decisions, you should ask yourselves a few questions.

  • How large is the area that I am mowing?

  • What size of mower deck do I want?

  • How many obstacles will I need to mow around?

  • What type of terrain will I be mowing on?

  • Will I use my mower for other projects?

Taking all of these factors into consideration will help you decide on which lawn mower to choose!

Mowing Area

In order to make sure you get the most out of your equipment, homeowners must take the size of their property into account. This will help determine deck size and horsepower. A mower with a bigger deck and higher horsepower, like our X500 Series, will help you complete your mowing job sooner.

Deck Size

Lawn mowers with larger cutting widths will typically help get the job done faster. On the other hand, smaller mowers like our 200 Series will allow operators to work in more constrained areas with limited access, such as smaller fenced-in backyards.

Obstacles

How many obstacles will you need to mow around? Some? Many? The more obstacles within a space, the tighter turning radius an operator will need. If you have a larger, more flat property with multiple obstacles, look at a John Deere Zero Turn Mower. ZTraks™ are known for their zero-degree turn radius, making obstacles a breeze. With a deck size of 42" to 60", they allow you to cover more ground in less time. Take a look at our Z330Z500, or Z700 Series.

Terrain

What type of terrain is your property? Understanding your terrain will help decide how much horsepower you need for your mower. A flat, less challenging terrain can require a mower with less horsepower. Properties with slopes and hills will require a tractor with more horsepower and added stability.

Attachments

A John Deere lawn tractor can perform a variety of tasks, with the right attachment! With the right attachment you can keep your John Deere busy year-round. A utility cart is the most versatile and great for hauling loads with your mower. Have a clean yard by adding a bagger to your setup. A rear blade or box blade will help smooth out rough terrain. Put a rotary broom to work to sweep away debris during any season.

Now that we've gone through all of the details we can see which option suits your property best!
