Boundary Lines For Your Fields

With harvest quickly approaching it is a great time to consider mapping new boundary lines for your fields. What are boundaries? These are simply lines that mark the outside edges of your field, as well as any waterways or other obstructions throughout the field. The exterior field edges are called exterior boundaries, while waterways would be considered interior boundaries. Once the crop is removed, fall is a great time to create new boundaries as the field edges are still well defined, and weather permitting, easy to navigate.

We have historically used boundaries for things like:

  • Section Control

  • Field Detection

  • Defining Field Edges For Unfamiliar Operators

With new technology, we are now utilizing boundaries for more and more functions. Gen 4 displays introduced boundary track. This allows the operator to use AutoTrac™ on all exterior end rows using one guidance line, rather than having separate guidance lines for each side of the field. Our Automation 4.0 bundle takes our guidance to the next level, utilizing boundaries for turn automation and autopath. Going forward, accurate boundaries will be critical to autonomy and future technology.

The most accurate way to map field boundaries is by driving them by hand with your John Deere Gator! While many newer John Deere gators have all the necessary wiring and brackets factory installed, we also sell kits to retrofit older models as well as universal kits for non-deere utvs. Once you have a GreenStar ready kit installed on your machine, we recommend either a 2630 or 4640 display and an RTK equipped Starfire receiver. Because SF1 or SF3 signal levels are subject to drift over time, it is important to utilize RTK to ensure the most accurate boundaries and year to year repeatability.
